Christchurch Earthquake damage

Christchurch, in the South Island of New Zealand was struck by a 7.1 magnitude earthquake at around 4:35am on Saturday, September 4th 2010. Although there was been resulting major damage, particularly in the central city, Kaiapoi and Wianoni there was no direct loss of life and only minor injuries.

These photos show four sites of earthquake damage in the city. There are worse hit areas and alos widespread minor damage and also 'invisible' damage where house appear to look alright from the road but on closer inspection are found to have serious structural damage.

I would have preferred to have closer shots than these but police and army personnel prevented any closer approach. I guess I should have had a look around the city and taken photos early on the Saturday morning before officials blocked everything off!
